Log Entry 21: Eagle and Child Pub and Afternoon exploits 7/15/2005
This afternoon we had lunch at the Eagle and Child pub, made famous as the gathering place for the Inklings, which included J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. It was known to them as the Bird and the Baby, as they were so familiar with it. We’ll have to come back and take some pictures, but it was pretty cool to be eating in that place, knowing what great literary history it has. I of course had Fish and Chips—my favourite meal.
Whatever happened to pubs in America? Though I like restaurants fine, you just can’t get good Fish and Chips. Williamsburg started us off on the right foot, but I guess everything just fell through as more people began to flock to the new country. Sad, really…I like pubs.
Anyway, after the pub we made our way back to ChCh. Stopped in Waterstones and got a pop-up map of Oxford. Everything is crazy right now due to impending Harry Potter release. I guess I will have to buy my copy later, since we’re going to the Open.
Yes, we are going to the British Open. It’s Cozad’s thing, but I really want to go back up to Scotland, just to be in that part of the country. It will cost a lot of money, but that is a given. Besides, I can say I was there.
We are leaving here tomorrow at 3:34 PM on a direct train to Edinburgh. Should get there about 9:30. We reserved our seats this afternoon. We’ll stay at Edinburgh University Friday and Saturday night, and go up to the Open Saturday. Hopefully, we’ll attend Eucharist at St. Mary’s Episcopal. Should be a good weekend trip.
Anyway, now I’m just relaxing, letting the fan blow on me, and drinking a glass of port to top off the day.
